Elisha Otis was born near Halifax, Vt., where his father was for many years a justice of the peace and a state legislator. He received a common education in his hometown and at the age of 19 moved to Troy, N.Y., where he went into the construction trade. Born August 3, 1811 - Died April 8, 1861. Elisha Graves Otis didn't invent the elevator; he invented something perhaps more important – the elevator brake – which made skyscrapers a practical reality. Born near Halifax, Vermont, Otis made several failed attempts at establishing businesses in his early years. Finally, in 1845, he tried to change his luck with a move to Albany, New York.
